I have a confession to make: politically, I lean toward the nerds. I hope that doesn't confound anybody, or turn anybody off; I just have a thing for graphic novels, RPGs, and books. Now, I could write an entire month on my favorite books, but right now, I'd like to write about some of the video games that are popular on campus.
First and foremost is Super Smash Brothers. This shouldn't surprise me because the first time I was in college, at Case Western Reserve University (a prestigious Ohio private school), that was all we played. Here's a picture of me and my bros in the throes of agony and glory:
You'll notice that I was rocking the Soylent Green hair cut. Yes, it was ill-advised, but I was eighteen and that's just what looked good to me at the time. So, that's kind of how I think of Super Smash: safe, the kind of thing that everybody enjoys, but not the greatest thing in retrospect.
The next games are RPGs. There are so many, I couldn't even begin to list them. Every time I ask somebody what their faorite RPG is, they name something that I haven't heard before; I'll never play all the games that are mentioned. But one game that everybody can agree on is Final Fantasy VII.
Surprisingly, not many people on this campus play sports games. That's fine with me, because I never excelled at those, but so many people at past locales enjoyed them- and first person shooters- that I was forced to develop a level of competency that I don't feel any pride in having. But now that the pressure is off, I can develop my skills at things that are important, such as Guitar Hero. That really is the big video game on campus.
The culture on campus is mostly meditation and self-actualization; but if anybody's interested, the video game culture is mostly, 1) guitar hero, 2) RPGs, and 3) Super Smash Brothers Melee.
