The weather has been absolutely ridiculous the past three days: not a cloud in the sky, light breeze, temperature in the low seventies, days that seem to last until ten pm. It's been insane. And (sigh!) I haven't done anything with the aforementioned good weather. It's not for lack of options, either. Yesterday I had four (4!) text messages trying to tempt me outside.
So what's wrong? Was I bitten by a vampire? Was I too busy composing my memoirs? NO! It's stupid allergy season, and I'm trying to avoid antihistamines this year. But, as I was discussing with one of my friends two days ago, I haven't come across an effective holistic method. He hadn't, either.
To be perfectly clear, allergy season in Iowa is unlike allergy season in any other state. Primarily, allergies are exacerbated by mutant, steroid-taking strains of whatever it is people are allergic to. It's the sort of thing that ancient people would have invented a god and a holy transgression to explain.
But very few people seem to be letting this whole allergy thing affect them. Are that many people not affected, or do they just have the good sense to enjoy as many nice days as come along? Maybe I need to "man up," get out of my room, and not worry that my nose has swollen to Ray Liotta proportions. Or, maybe I'll have to sacrifice a bundle of grain to Pollenus, God of the Itch. Either way, it's a great day, and I feel obligated to go outside and see Mr. Zip-a-dee-do-dah with a blue bird on his shoulder. Really. It's that nice. Ridiculous.
